Casual PSV Driver

The successful candidate will be required to be available at short notice to cover sick and annual leave to our in house fleet of PSV drivers. The post would be suitable for a person looking to return to work or semi-retired.

A holder of a vocational class D driving license and current driver DQC entitlement. The postholder will be responsible for ensuring that any vehicle operated on behalf of the Council is done so in a safe manner in compliance with all relevant law and Council regulations so as not to jeopardise the Council’s PSV Operator License.

The role will involve manual handling of wheelchairs and passengers including the operating of tail lifts, ramps and wheelchair securing equipment. It may also require manual handling of boxes / crates / mail bags when carrying out deliveries of goods rather than passengers. The postholder may be required to drive a public bus service operating fares, which will require the handling of cash.

The postholder will need to have empathy to vulnerable adults, children and young people with special educational needs. Work in partnership with passenger assistants to meet the client’s needs, delivering a smooth efficient journey to the clients destination.

Main Duties

Under the day to day supervision of the Driver Supervisor the primary role for the post holder will be to drive one of the Council’s in-house PCV vehicles responsible for the provision of home to school transport or other transport for vulnerable young people or adults. The postholder may also provide in-house goods delivery services using appropriate vehicles.

Selection Criteria

You will hold a clean vocational driving licence – full class D with no restrictions
You will hold a valid Driver CPC card
You will hold a valid Driver Tachograph card
You will have experience of working in a similar area providing passenger transport
You will be up to date with all of the legal requirements for a vocational driver operating vehicles on an Operating License.
You will be able to demonstrate that you can keep accurate records where required (for example driver hours)
You should be able to demonstrate that you are able to plan and drive routes in the most efficient manner
You will have some numeracy skills that will enable you to safely handle cash transactions if necessary.
You should have experience of dealing with day to day customer issues

You will have up to date knowledge of safe arrangements for loading and securing wheelchairs and other specialist equipment.
You will have an awareness of the importance of safeguarding vulnerable young people and adults.

Use of a vehicle

If the nature of the duties require you to travel on Council business on a regular basis, so you must either have a current driving licence and provide a car, or have access to appropriate means of travel.

If you use your vehicle on authorised Council business, you will receive a mileage payment based on the Inland Revenue Authorised Mileage Allowance Payment Scheme (AMAPS). The allowance is provided on the condition that your own insurance covers you for business use and indemnifies the Council against claim (including those concerning passengers) arising out of the use of the vehicle on official business. You will also be eligible for a car loan if you meet the criteria within the Council’s Car Loan Scheme.
