Associate Music Teacher – Vocal

Summary of Post

To teach a musical discipline or disciplines to classes, groups of learners, or individuals as directed, including regular reporting on progress and the control of equipment; and to contribute to the work of the South Gloucestershire Music Hub (SGMH) in accordance with the broad policies and practices of Music Education in South Gloucestershire, specifically to:

Deliver high quality music teaching across the range of abilities, ages and musical interests within schools

Work with the Music and Arts Strategy Manager and Music Progression and Participation Leader in organising, planning and providing teaching that results in the highest possible standards of musical achievement for all.

Main Duties

An experienced teacher of voice is required. The person appointed must be able to teach throughout the age range from KS 1 to KS 5. The majority of teaching in primary schools will be project based to groups ranging in size from 1 to 4 classes depending on the requirements of the school. At secondary level the work could include coaching holiday courses in musical theatre. In addition to this there may be small group and individual teaching available. The ability to direct a choir will be an advantage.

1. To teach music to individuals, small groups and possibly whole class groups and to provide expert advice and guidance for the school in the teaching of music and to ensure the highest possible standard of achievement for all.

2. To act as the first point of contact for the school on day to day matters relating to the music programme and to act to resolve difficulties in the first instance wherever possible.

3. To ensure that the equipment used for music is maintained to a high standard and new equipment is ordered when necessary in liaison with the Music and Arts Strategy Manager and Music Progression and Participation Leader.

4. To take responsibility for pupils when delivering music teaching

5. To attend staff meetings and seek continual professional development in all matters affecting work.

6. To be aware of and implement school policies and to actively promote the agreed aims and vision of the school.

7. To follow music hub guidelines in line with additional requirements from the school.

8. To adhere to the music hub code of conduct at all times.

9. To promote South Gloucestershire Music Hub to enhance students’ musical opportunities.

Delivering lessons to pupils

10. Using clearly structured teaching and challenging learning activities; they interest and motivate pupils, and advance their independence as learners.

11. To formulate lesson plans for pupils at all stages of music ability and skills, from beginners onwards.

12. Communicate effectively and sensitively with pupils to support their learning.

13. Promote and support the inclusion of all pupils in the learning activities in which they are involved.

14. Use behaviour management strategies, in line with the school’s policy and procedures, which contribute to a purposeful learning environment.

15. Where relevant, guide the work of other adults supporting teaching and learning in the music lesson.

16. Recognise and respond effectively to equal opportunities issues as they arise, including by challenging stereotyped views, and by challenging bullying or harassment, following relevant policies and procedures.

17. To maintain class discipline in whole class music sessions.

Assessing and recording the development, progress and attainment of pupils

18. Monitor pupils’ responses to learning tasks and modify their approach accordingly.

19. Monitor pupils’ participation and progress, providing feedback to teachers, and giving constructive support to pupils as they learn.

20. To work to the National Curriculum and any external examination board standards i.e Trinity/Associated Board/Rockschool

Reporting on the development, progress and attainment of pupils

21. Contribute to maintaining and analysing records of pupils’ progress

22. To advise and inform parents of their children’s progress.



Selection Criteria

Essential

Have achieved at least a Grade 8 qualification in their first instrument and be able to demonstrate they are still performing at this level

Have experience of working with children

Have sufficient understanding of their area to support pupils’ learning, and be able to acquire further knowledge to contribute effectively and with confidence to the classes in which they are involved

Be familiar with the age-related expectations of pupils and the main teaching methods in relation to music instruction

Understand the aims, content, teaching strategies and intended outcomes for the lessons in which they are involved, and understand the place of these in the related teaching programme

Aware of the statutory frameworks relevant to their role

Know the legal definition of Special Educational Needs (SEN), and are familiar with the guidance about meeting special educational needs given in the SEN Code of Practice

Know a range of strategies to establish a purposeful learning environment and to promote good behaviour


Desirable

Have achieved at least a Grade 5 qualification on the piano/keyboard and be able to demonstrate they are still performing at this level

The ability to conduct an ensemble
