We have an exciting opportunity within our Adult Care Service for an experienced Adult Social Care Social Worker to join our senior leadership team as Principal Social Worker for Adults.

Reporting directly to the Director of Adult Social Services and Housing the post holder will be accountable to embedding professional standards, quality assurance and taking a lead role in a variety of transformational programmes to embed new approaches and ways of working.

The post holder will lead on the development of social work practice across the service. Ensure service compliance with statutory requirements, policy process and best practice.

The post holder will work closely with a wide range of colleagues from health, other local authorities, across the service and the council. There will be opportunities to lead and contribute to projects to improve efficiency and develop the service and wider health and social care system.

The main accountabilities of the role are to:

• Lead and oversee excellent social work practice
• Support and develop arrangements for excellent practice
• Lead the development of excellent social workers
• Support effective social work supervision and decision making
• Oversee quality assurance and improvement of social work practice
• Advise the director of adult social services and/or wider council in complex or controversial cases and on developing case and other law relating to social work practice
• Function at the strategic level of the Professional Capabilities framework
• Be visible across the organisation from elected members and senior manager to frontline social workers, people who use services and carers and partners
• As required by registered bodies and governance arrangements report and represent the authority regionally and nationally.

Main Duties

You will be able to:

Influence change programmes to maximise potential of social work practice across health and social care system to improve outcomes for residents and best use of resources for the authority.

Analyse data and monitor quality, to make recommendations that will improve policy, process and practice.

Bring Inspire and engage social workers and professional colleagues to adopt new ways of working

Contribute to service level workforce planning and lead on social work resourcing and retention initiatives such as; ASYE, CPD, students placements, social work apprenticeships.

Mentor and coach others as required to improve practice and service outcomes

Lead on need identification and design of training and development strategies for social workers,

Design, monitor and quality assure best practice professional supervision.

Provide expert advice to social workers, managers, service leaders, partners and members on complex and high risk cases. Effectively manage risk where there is risk of, or actual, significant harm to service users to ensure that service users are protected from abuse.

Keep up to date on professional research and development and relevant legislative changes. Advise senior leaders on impact and recommend actions as required

Ensure that agreed performance targets are consistently delivered, monitored and reviewed, as well as sustain optimal service performance.

Ensure good quality assessment, planning, intervention and reviewing which is essential to providing good outcomes for service users.

Ensure that agreed thresholds for intervention are maintained and statutory requirements are met.

Lead, develop, co-ordinate and support service planning, and the production of plans for service areas.

Make a significant contribution to budget management and manage a development budget.

Selection Criteria

Pre-screening – you will be interviewed against these criteria in addition to the essential criteria.

Recognised and relevant professional qualification e.g. Dips, CQSW, CSS. Registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) – and able to demonstrate evidence of continuous professional development to develop and maintain expertise in learning and development.

Substantial post qualification experience gained in a management and professional supervisory capacity in adult social care and safeguarding
Able to demonstrate a thorough knowledge of legislation guidance and practice in the area of adult social work and social care and safeguarding issues and can provide

Full clean drivers licence and access to a car to travel to a range of locations including home visits.


• Ability to offer specialist knowledge and expertise on workforce development in the area of safeguarding direct to service in specific circumstances

• Able to demonstrate ability to think and act strategically, solve problems and make decisions regarding adult safeguarding issues

• Able to build relationships within and outside the Department of CAH; an ability to influence decision makers and work collaboratively with stakeholders to embed fit for purpose solutions and continually review social work practice to meet legislative and business needs

• Excellent analytical and reasoning skills with well-developed verbal and written skills; and competent in the use performance information data.

• Demonstrate experience in managing change effectively and ability to manage major projects in a safeguarding/ social work setting

• Proven ability to work flexibly with excellent management skills to prioritise and set appropriate deadlines

You will be required to maintain HCPC registration.
