Summary of Post

The UX Designer is responsible for ensuring the highest standard of usability across all of South Gloucestershire Council’s web presence.

Reporting to the Digital Manager, they will be part of a multi-disciplinary Digital team supporting the work of the council.

This post is full time and a limited term contract for two years.

Main Duties

Facilitate a consistent, intuitive and engaging user experience across all digital channels.
Create wireframes or prototypes to demo and test designs prior to implementation.
Design, test and improve page components and layouts.
Test and improve website structure and key user journeys.
Ensuring a consistent style is used across the digital work of the organisation, utilising and updating the style guide as necessary.
Work with key stakeholders to define requirements and conduct user research (including developing personas and user stories).
Manage usability testing.
Continually review development work to ensure customer and business needs are satisfied.
Support user-focused content design on council websites.
Support the Digital Manager in the development of digital strategy.
Lead team projects and deputise for the Digital Manager as required.
Monitor developments and innovations in digital technologies and channels, in order to provide advice and recommendations within the team and to senior managers.

Selection Criteria

• Holds a relevant degree, equivalent level professional qualification or equivalent relevant experience
• Fluent in current best practice UX design techniques, tools and methodologies and UI design patterns
• Experience of developing UX design artefacts, such as prototypes, personas, user journeys and wireframes
• Skilled in other areas of UX such as: Information architecture, sitemaps and navigation design; Usability audits and competitor analysis; Optimisation activities such as A/B testing.
• Ability to utilise Google Analytics to inform UX decisions
• Experience of usability testing of digital products and services
• Excellent interpersonal and influencing skills - able to proactively build effective working relationships at all levels
• Experience of providing specialist digital advice and consultancy at senior management level
• Excellent understanding of Agile / Scrum approaches
• Excellent understanding of web accessibility best practice
• Broad understanding of web technologies, including HTML and CSS; a track record of ongoing professional development in new digital technologies
• Exemplifying the Council's values and behaviours.


• Experience of user-focused content design
• Experience of planning and delivering user research
• Prior experience of government / public sector

Use of a vehicle

If the nature of the duties require you to travel on Council business on a regular basis, so you must either have a current driving licence and provide a car, or have access to appropriate means of travel.

If you use your vehicle on authorised Council business, you will receive a mileage payment based on the Inland Revenue Authorised Mileage Allowance Payment Scheme (AMAPS). The allowance is provided on the condition that your own insurance covers you for business use and indemnifies the Council against claim (including those concerning passengers) arising out of the use of the vehicle on official business. You will also be eligible for a car loan if you meet the criteria within the Council’s Car Loan Scheme.

Salary: £31,401 to £34,106
