Summary of Post

Required from 1st September 2019, a suitably qualified and experienced teacher for young people aged 10-17 years. A teaching qualification is essential, although this could encompass either Secondary education, FE, Adult Learning, or upper Primary education. Previous experience of working in a secure setting and/or with challenging young people is desirable.

The successful candidate will be a key member of the Education Department and will also be personal tutor to a group of young people, including liaison with Key-Workers, other Care Staff and professionals.

We would welcome applications from Teachers of the following subject areas: Science/History/Geography/RE and Drama.

This post is a fixed term contract for 12 months and part time 22.2 hours a week (working days negotiable).

Interviews to be held week commencing 2nd September 2019.

Vinney Green Secure Unit opened in February 1995, and accommodates 24 young people of both sexes, aged between 10 and 18. The Unit has been designed to a very high standard and is structured to provide physical containment in an environment which is comfortable and attractive. Vinney Green Secure Unit offers young people a safe and caring environment, where they experience quality care, education, recreational facilities, vocational and life skills training.

Main Duties

To develop appropriate Science/History/Geography/RE/Drama courses. Some young people will study these subjects to GCSE level and will need support in entering for these qualifications. Other young people require a grounding in these subjects that is suitable for both a range of abilities and placement lengths.

The successful candidate will need to use a wide range of teaching methods and behaviour management strategies in order to maximise learning in the class.

To ensure that the security and safety of the classroom is maintained at all times – tools are accounted for, locked away and recorded. Procedures regarding safety checks are completed, accidents involving young people/staff members are recorded in line with the unit’s protocols and procedures.

To implement individual assessment in terms of risk and need of young people and subsequent design and implementation of individual programme plans.

To be a personal tutor to a group of young people – to co-ordinate their IEP, to set and review targets, to liaise with key workers, co-ordinate and summarise monthly education reports and attend (and present at) Case Review meetings.

To empower the young people to play an active part in their individual learning and programme plan.

To take an active part in liaising with other agencies involved with the young people – keyworkers, tutors, YOT workers and other related services in developing an ongoing support package in the community.

To prepare monthly reports and contribute to review meetings as required.

As determined by the assessed need, to facilitate and support young people in meeting their optimum abilities.

To work actively and positively in developing appropriate strategies for young people who have complex learning needs.

To keep abreast of developments in the field and participate in staff training and development programmes as relevant.

Selection Criteria

Essential

Qualified Teacher Status

Previous experience of working with pupils in an educational, residential and/or vocational training setting, with proven ability to teach a Science/History/Geography/RE/Drama subject

A clear understanding of the issues surrounding impaired literacy and numeracy development, specific learning difficulties and differentiation of the curriculum – especially in relation to significantly disaffected pupils

Able to apply the national criteria to planning and assessing pupils work with due regard for individual need

Proven knowledge of a range of appropriate strategies for managing pupils with behaviour and/or learning difficulties

Able to make effective and robust written reports about a pupil’s progress, achievement and behaviour

Able to use assessment information to inform planning and delivery of lessons and to set realistic individual goals

Able to be consistent in managing pupils in challenging and changing circumstances and relate positively to troubled young people

Being able to speak effectively in meetings and to present to a group of professional colleagues

Computer literate and able to use various packages

To have an understanding and commitment to equal opportunities

Desirable

Further qualification and training in meeting the needs of pupils with SEN, particularly Emotional, Behavioural and Social difficulties

Previous teaching experience in a special setting: SEN in mainstream, special school, special unit etc., particularly with pupils with EBD

Experience of working with pupils at Key Stages 3,4 and 5…but where achievement levels can be as low as Key Stage 1 or 2

Evidence of awareness of the working environment in terms of Security and Health and Safety

Knowledge of writing and implementing IEPs

The secure unit is a closed facility and movement is governed by the controlled unlocking of electronic doors. The environment can become tense and anxiety provoking, given that the young people are detained. Young people can present physically threatening behaviour and surveillance cameras are used in most areas of the building.

Once on duty, there will be no opportunity to leave the building.

Vinney Green Secure Unit is a no smoking environment and there is no provision to facilitate smoking.

Staff will be required to adopt an appropriate standard of dress (including jewellery).

Staffs personal belongings are required to be left in a provided locker on entry into the building.

Directed time is 32.5 hours per week FTE and 39 weeks per year but it should be noted that the school operates outside of mainstream establishments in terms of agreed closures. Therefore a small amount of annual leave must be taken at any time subject to the units procedures and no period of leave exceeding three weeks.

There is a requirement for employees to make a monthly contribution towards the beverages provided by the unit, which is deducted at source.

This post is subject to a Disqualification from Working with Children declaration.

This post is subject to the successful completion of the General Services Control and Restraint training course.

In the future there may be a requirement to undertake further physical fitness checks.

Use of a vehicle

The nature of the duties of this post will require you to travel on Council business on a regular basis, so you must either have a current driving licence and provide a car, or have access to appropriate means of travel.

If you use your vehicle on authorised Council business, you will receive a mileage payment based on the Inland Revenue Authorised Mileage Allowance Payment Scheme (AMAPS). The allowance is provided on the condition that your own insurance covers you for business use and indemnifies the Council against claim (including those concerning passengers) arising out of the use of the vehicle on official business. You will also be eligible for a car loan if you meet the criteria within the Council’s Car Loan Scheme.

Salary: Main Pay Range/Upper Pay Range, plus secure unit allowance of £2,284, per annum pro rata.

Hours: The post is 0.6, however exact working days are negotiable
