Bike Mechanic, Bikeability Team

Summary of Post

The core functions of the Road Safety (ETP) team are to reduce the level of people killed and injured on South Gloucestershire roads. To encourage more sustainable and safe journeys by delivering education and training to all road user groups. To provide an efficient and effective Bikeability (cycle) training on behalf of the council.

Our key customers are all road users, children and young adults in full time education. Our partners are Schools, Transport Policy, Public Health, Children and Adult Services, Avon & Somerset Police, Avon Fire and Rescue, other local authorities and major employers.

Under the supervision of the Road Safety Officer Bikeability, you will work within the Bikeability Cycle Training team repairing and servicing bikes for children at primary and secondary school as well as for adults at events organised by the road safety team (i.e. Dr Bike clinics). Ideally you will also be an accredited Bikeability instructor and deliver cycle training.

Main Duties

• Be able to service and repair all types of bikes.
• Have a good understanding of health and safety to ensure the safe operation of bikes they are servicing and follow all risk assessments processes.
• Display good customer service skills in managing repairs and supporting schools.
• Promote the benefits of cycling and cycling safety, including cycle maintenance and servicing.
• Communicate with team members, customers and suppliers, resolving any issues or problems in order to provide an effective service.
• Where appropriate monitor and maintain agreed levels of stock/supplies, place order and check goods upon receipt, keeping accurate records.
• Accurately complete documents and records relevant to your own unit or area ensuring they are accessible.




Selection Criteria

Essential

• A vocational qualification e.eg. NVQ2 or equivalent qualification. You will be expected to acquire this if not already held.
• Have experience of working in a similar service area.
• Demonstrate an understanding of regulations and codes of practice relevant to the area of work.
• Have experience of using relevant equipment.
• Have the ability to work as part of a team and to communicate with colleagues, customers and suppliers.
• Plan and organise your own daily tasks.
• Be an experienced cyclists andable to cycle in all traffic and road conditions to test bikes.
• Exemplifying the Council's values and behaviours.

Desirable
• National Standards Instructors Training qualification.

Use of a vehicle

If the nature of the duties require you to travel on Council business on a regular basis, so you must either have a current driving licence and provide a car, or have access to appropriate means of travel.

If you use your vehicle on authorised Council business, you will receive a mileage payment based on the Inland Revenue Authorised Mileage Allowance Payment Scheme (AMAPS). The allowance is provided on the condition that your own insurance covers you for business use and indemnifies the Council against claim (including those concerning passengers) arising out of the use of the vehicle on official business. You will also be eligible for a car loan if you meet the criteria within the Council’s Car Loan Scheme.
