Summary of the post:

Cook 29 hours

Under the general supervision of the Manager to undertake the planning, ordering, preparation and serving of meals which meet the dietary needs and choices of service users. In addition, you will ensure that the kitchen area conforms to health and safety standards.

Main Duties:

The post holder will provide a high standard of nutritional meal provision and cooking to meet the dietary needs of residents and to serve food to a standard required by the Authority’s policies and procedures. The post holder will also ensure the kitchen area conforms to health and safety standards.
The key responsibilities of the post are:

• Plan menus in conjunction with the Registered/Duty Manager and residents to ensure customer care is maintained.
• Prepare special dietary meals, where appropriate, ensuring choice of menu.
• Prepare and serve meals to residents and supervise safe service of meals, taken to a place of resident’s choice.
• Ensure residents have every opportunity to request their preferred choice of food, which is accessible throughout 24 hours.
• Supervise, monitor and assist with the routine cleaning tasks in food production areas, equipment and utensils.
• Supervise and monitor daily temperature recording and other documentation as required by policies and procedures.
• Full responsibility for ordering of supplies, safe storage, stock rotating and stock management, including appropriate record keeping.
• Liaise with contractors and suppliers on a regular basis.
• Support and assist other staff in both the kitchen or the dining room as required
• Allocate daily tasks to other Housekeeping staff.
• Monitor all hygiene and health and safety in the kitchen and surrounding areas and report any unsafe practices or equipment to the Registered/Duty Manager.


Selection Criteria:

You must have knowledge of Health and Safety issues and knowledge of Environmental Health standards.

You will need to be flexible regarding hours worked.


Ideally you will have a have Food Hygiene certificate and NVQ Level 2 in Catering (or a commitment to achieving it). Experience of cooking for large groups would also be beneficial, as would knowledge of nutrition and specialist diets (eg vegan, gluten free, diabetic and cultural).

Previous experience stocktaking and ordering would be helpful as would experience of moving and handling heavy loads.




Important Information:

You will be working on a two week rota 4 days per week which includes weekends and Bank Holidays. There will be 3 morning shifts starting at 7.30am and one afternoon shift finishing at 6pm.
