Full Time. Permanent

Do you want to make a difference to a young person’s life?

This role is challenging and there will be some physical aspects to the job, but we can assure you that this will be one of the most rewarding jobs that you will ever do!

Vinney Green is a secure residential unit which houses young people who may be in need of support and intervention in a safe and caring environment, where they experience quality care, rehabilitation, education, vocational and life skills training.

You will make a difference by helping young people develop the values, skills, knowledge, self-control and direction that will enable them to return to the community in a more positive and purposeful way.

How you will make a difference:
You will be providing on-going care and supervision of young people resident within the Unit including (but not limited to) the following responsibilities:

• Establish good, professional relationships with young people who display high-risk and often challenging behaviour and to model pro-social behaviour. There will be an opportunity for you to set and maintain appropriate limits on young people’s behaviour and create opportunities for them to develop more pro-social behaviour.

• Support children and young people to maintain their personal hygiene and appearance and to maintain acceptable standards in their living environment.

• Contribute to the protection of young people from abuse including bullying and intimidation by other young people. Additionally, challenging negative behaviour using our Behaviour Management policy.

• Organise, plan and engage with individual and group activities, designed to enrich the young people’s experience. This could be anything from playing a board game to organising a football match! You will have the opportunity to liaise with a variety of interested agencies and parties.

• To contribute and participate in the education of the young people, including assistance with in-class studies and homework.

• You will ensure that the security of the Unit is maintained at all times: preventing absconding or any attempt to escape; ensuring young people are appropriately and securely locked within their own designated areas at the correct times; and undertaking room and personal searches as required.

• Responding to and dealing with situations where a young person may be displaying challenging, aggressive or vulnerable behaviour.

• Contribute to the rehabilitation and reintegration of young people back into the community by supporting mobilities and escorts to external appointments where appropriate.

What we can offer you:

The opportunity to undertake training and development activity, including achievement of the Level 3 Diploma programme. Full training will also be provided including Safeguarding and Restrictive Physical Intervention training.

On top of your annual salary we offer a Secure Unit allowance of £2,330 per annum and enhancements for Sunday and Bank Holiday working.

We have a very supportive environment, we offer regular one to one supervisions for all staff and you are encouraged to discuss and reflect upon your working role with supervisors on a regular basis. We also offer a full induction and shadowing process for all new staff.

What we need from you:

Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal) in order to record and communicate essential information. This will include the use of basic computer packages such as MS Word and MS Excel.

An understanding and recognition of the demands of working with young people who may have complex needs or exhibit challenging behaviour and to be able to deal with these in a non-judgmental manner.

Able to work shifts, weekends and bank holidays.

Although it’s not essential you may also have a Level 3 Diploma in Residential Childcare or a professional childcare qualification such as DipSW, CSS, CQSW or CRCCYP.

An enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is needed for this post.

Things we need you to know:

The unit works on shift patterns, you will be working an average of 37 hours per week, following a designated shift pattern working between the hours of 7.30am – 10.30pm, alternate weekends and some shifts may be on bank holidays. Meals are normally eaten with young people. Annual leave must be taken in conjunction with the needs of the secure service.

Young people can present physically threatening behaviour and the environment can become tense and anxiety provoking, so for everybody’s safety surveillance cameras are in use in most areas of the building.

Vinney Green operates a full non-smoking environment, and there is no provision to facilitate smoking anywhere on site. Staff’s personal belongings are required to be left in a provided locker on entry into the building and we may require you to undertake a further physical fitness check.

We understand this is a lot of information and this role might not be for everyone, but if you’ve read the above and are still excited about this opportunity we would love to hear from you.
