Further information

How you’ll make a difference:

As an apprentice, you will make a difference by helping to shape technology solutions that deliver services to the residents and businesses of South Gloucestershire via our website or get used by front-line key workers in their day-to-day roles at the council.

What will you be doing?

Once up and running you will be working on several different technology projects but will be supported by an experienced and friendly team. Although at the moment most of us are home working, they will always be on the end of a video call or instant message.

As a team we already work remotely from one another and have done for some time now – we even work with contractors in Scotland and India so working through daily video calls is already pretty normal for us!

The most challenging aspects of your apprenticeship will be working from home most days and working on several different large technology projects at the same time.

Throughout the apprenticeship, you’ll learn how to write and/or run test scripts for projects that are assigned to you, using the latest tools (e.g. Azure DevOps, device emulators).

As an apprentice we will teach you about testing methodology and best practice. You’ll gain an understanding of technology being used to implement the solutions that you’ll be testing. (e.g. Dynamics 365, Office 365, Azure, various council systems). You’ll also develop sound knowledge in the Software Development Lifecycle, DevOps, ITIL and Agile approaches, processes, and methodologies.

You’ll also learn about the roles and work undertaken in a typical agile development team of which you’ll be a key part and that of the wider ICT Teams (e.g. infrastructure, service desk) play in delivering technology services to an organisation.

Throughout your 24 month apprenticeship, we will allocate you a workplace mentor to give you guidance and support in completing your Level 4 in Software Tester.

What we need from you:

Ideally hold a minimum qualification in GCSE English and Maths at grade C or 4 and above, or be willing to undertake and gain Functional Skills in English and Maths as part of the apprenticeship.

A ‘Levels in any subject or BTEC equivalent.

You will need to have logical and creative thinking skills.

Good analytical and problem solving skills.

Strong communication skills to communicate effectively in a variety of situations.

To succeed in this role you must have a good work ethic and commitment to gaining your qualification as well as your learning on the job and your employment.

Our teams at South Gloucestershire Council are making a real difference to the lives of people who live, work and learn here.

We're building and shaping communities which people are proud of. We’re providing essential services across our internal network to ensure we can fully support our community.

We've achieved a great deal, but we need talented and dedicated people to ensure we continue to make a difference.

Things we need you to know:

Throughout your working day you will experience various online meetings as necessary to discuss the projects that you are working on with people in the team. We all keep in touch via chats and calls in Microsoft Teams – there is always someone on-hand.

As part of this training route you do need to undertake a basic skills assessment as part of the selection process. These will be emailed to you by the training provider, Gloucestershire College and be completed by the deadline set.

The apprenticeship training requires you to attend college on a block release basis which will take place at Gloucestershire College, Llanthony Road, Gloucester, GL2 5JQ. You must be willing to travel to your place of learning.

The college have implemented social distancing measures to maintain safety of all of it’s students and next start date for this course is the 16th November 2020.

The council will cover your travel expenses to the college.

You’ll be completing a Level 4 Software Tester apprenticeship which will provide you with a highly transferable set of knowledge and skills, which you gain by working for us. At college you’ll get to learn the following core areas;

• Software testing procedures
• Reviewing software requirements
• Designing simple test strategies
• Analysing test requirements and designing test plans
• Developing represented and realistic test data
• Software testing types
• Recording test activities with records and reports
• Assessing test results against expected results

You’ll also gain qualification in;

• ISTQB Foundation

When you aren’t at college, the rest of your time will be spent with us learning on the job.

In addition to your workplace mentor, you will also be allocated an assessor by Gloucestershire College, who will come to visit you at work to complete reviews. These reviews are simply to make sure you are on track and happy.

This apprenticeship also requires you to complete an end point assessment which will see you demonstrate what you have learned as an apprentice and how it can be applied in any other organisation. This will be another chance for you to shine!

The end point assessment consists of a portfolio, project and interview. Sound scary? Don’t worry, we and your assessor will give you plenty of support and encouragement to ensure you are prepared and confident to complete this stage. We also have plenty of apprentices here that can give you tips and help ease any nerves or concerns, because they have done it themselves!

We understand this is a lot of information and this apprenticeship might not be for everyone, but if you’ve read the above and are still excited about this opportunity we would love to hear from you.
