Area Maintenance Inspector

Summary of Post

The post is primarily to carry out inspections, assessments and decision making on all aspects of street care services, in response to customer stakeholder and internal enquiries. Therefore providing the critical link between the service users, the customer call centre, operational teams and other officers within Street Care.

Main Duties

The post is a mobile working post receiving jobs and queries through a number of mobile devices. Therefore the post holder will be reacting to queries visiting sites around the council assessing problems and making decisions on potential solutions. The post holder will be expected to issue work tickets for essential minor works, monitoring any works effecting the highway and where appropriate they will Investigate, consider action and Initiate and manage potential breaches of relevant legislation including encroachments, damage to Council infrastructure along with involvement in neighbour disputes.

The post holder will be expected to communicate and respond effectively and timely to customers and stakeholders on the progress of any action and take ownership of their dedicated area. Inspectors will also be expected to assist in controlling emergency situations such as severe weather or large scale traffic disruption.

The post holder will also be expected to assist in administrative arrangements when assessing licensing agreements and enforcement issues.

As the front face of the Council the post holder is expected to be professional at all times, act in a way that is responsive to the public and in accordance with the principles of good customer care.

Selection Criteria

Essential

Substantial experience of highway maintenance, including latest techniques in maintenance and repair and relevant experience in horticulture and open space management.

A working understanding of the Highways Act, and other relevant legislation.

You will be able to collate information from a variety of sources and present findings.

You will be able to prioritise workloads to meet peaks in demand.

Excellent IT skills including spreadsheets, word processing skills, use of PDA’s and handheld technology.

You will be able to work as part of a team contributing to effective service delivery.

You will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills and be able to demonstrate a commitment to good customer care.

Exemplify the Council’s values and behaviours.

Desirable

You will hold a specialist further education qualification e.g. NVQ3 or equivalent, or equivalent considerable relevant experience.

You will demonstrate knowledge in the use of appropriate software packages including in house systems.

An understanding of the Environmental Protection Act.
