Assistant Engineer/ Engineer (Design)

Summary of Post

This role is to design and implement traffic schemes in the Capital Programme, particularly those requiring permanent traffic regulation orders.

Main Duties

You will be required to:-

Design schemes and prepare drawings including TRO drawings and associated traffic sign drawings in accordance with national and council standards.

Liaise with in house teams as part of the design process.

Carry out consultation, liaise with members of the public, councillors, others and liaise with our legal section to advertise the TROs.

Prepare objection reports and submit them for decision.

You may also be required to prepare detailed designs in accordance with national and council standards and guidelines and arrange for them to be implemented by our in-house contractor.

In some cases supervision of installation of the works may be required.

Selection Criteria

For the Hay 7 post

Educated to degree standard or equivalent with substantial relevant experience.

You will have excellent customer service skills and a strong customer focus in your ability to deal with consultees and in particular objectors.

You will be experienced at writing objection reports.

You will be proficient in the use of Autocad, Keysigns, Keylines.

You will have a thorough knowledge of the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions.

You will have a good knowledge of the relevant sections of the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges.

You will have previous experience of implementation of waiting restriction schemes and other schemes requiring TROs.

You will have good attention to detail and the ability to produce accurate, error free work.

All of the above plus Chartered or Incorporated Membership of an appropriate Institution.

Use of a vehicle

If the nature of the duties require you to travel on Council business on a regular basis, so you must either have a current driving licence and provide a car, or have access to appropriate means of travel.

If you use your vehicle on authorised Council business, you will receive a mileage payment based on the Inland Revenue Authorised Mileage Allowance Payment Scheme (AMAPS). The allowance is provided on the condition that your own insurance covers you for business use and indemnifies the Council against claim (including those concerning passengers) arising out of the use of the vehicle on official business. You will also be eligible for a car loan if you meet the criteria within the Council’s Car Loan Scheme.

Salary: £28,221 to £34,106 (depending on experience)
