South Gloucestershire Council are seeking a Care Assistant Apprentice who has a keen interest in people and positive caring attitude toward others.

This apprenticeship is based in Alexandra Way Care Home in Thornbury and will include working a variety of early and late shifts and alternate weekends. The earliest shift would commence at 7am with the latest shift ending at 10pm.

Over the duration of the apprenticeship you will receive supervision, guidance and support from your workplace supervisor and a workplace mentor.
You'll be trained and gain work experience to assist in developing and maintaining a supportive living environment to meets the needs of our residents. You will also help to maximise their independence and provide physical, social and emotional care support.

You will also gain and develop knowledge of Care Plans, Case Reviews, Community Care Legislation, report writing and awareness of current legislation (i.e.Health and Safety at Work, Electricity regulations, COSHH, fire procedures, security checks of building).

This is a work based learning apprenticeship where you will complete a Level 2 in Adult Care and gain a work-related professional qualification.

It is a requirement of employment that an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is obtained for this post. This means that you must declare any criminal convictions, cautions, reprimands or final warnings unless these are protected as defined by the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) order 1975 (amended in 2013).

Please note that you will be expected to undertake a basic skills assessment as part of the selection process at SGS College, Filton Avenue, Filton, Bristol, BS34 7AF. These will take place week commencing 8th May 2019.

Please note that as per the Care Quality Commission (CQC) requirements, a worker aged 18 or older is required for this post.

Main Duties

To undertake a high standard of care for service users – this includes bathing, washing and dressing, including those temporarily unwell.

To assist service users to eat and drink and to serve meals to service users in the dining room or a place the service user choose to eat.

To have special responsibility for individuals through key working.

To maintain service user records as necessary and occasionally prepare relevant information on residents both verbally and in writing.

To contribute to the protection of individuals from abuse.

To support individuals experiencing a change in their care requirements and provision and to enable them to maintain and develop their personal skills.

To participate in and promote the Quality Assurance monitoring system.

To contribute to administration and recording of medication as per current guidelines.

Selection Criteria

• Must hold GCSE's in English and Maths at grade C or 4 and above, or equivalent, or be willing to work towards gaining Level 2 in English and Maths.

• Have good verbal and written communication skills being able to communicate well with others.

• Be able to be flexible and adaptable to respond to unpredictable or unexpected situations.

• Physically able to assist service users with personal care and other activities.

• Be able to demonstrable ability to treat residents with dignity, respect and empathy.

Additional Information

You will need to ensure you can travel to your place of work based at Alexandra Way Care Home in Thornbury.

This apprenticeship will also involve additional training at venues in Kingswood, Hanham and Southmead Hospital, all of which you will need to ensure you can travel to. The council will reimburse any mileage or public transport costs incurred for the additional training.

This apprenticeship will include working a variety of early and late shifts and alternate weekends. The earliest shift would commence at 7am with the latest shift ending at 10pm.
