Further information

If you’d like to gain a degree without the debt, we are looking for a Civil Engineering Apprentice to undertake this amazing opportunity to develop into a professional career.

As our apprentice your affinity for mathematics and attention to detail will be a welcome addition to our team at South Gloucestershire Council who are making a real difference to the lives of the people who live, work and learn here.

We’ve achieved a great deal, but were ambitious about the future. Join us and be part of something bigger.

How you’ll make a difference

Our StreetCare Transport and Waste division play a key lead role on major scheme project management and delivery across South Gloucestershire. The team work with other Local Authorities and partners across the West of England.

As our apprentice, you’ll help support in overseeing the implementation of projects, and contribute in the delivery of civil engineering schemes. You will learn and gain knowledge within a number of engineering disciplines working on various projects to gain practical experience using the latest applications and technologies. You will develop skills, competencies and experience required to gain a professional qualification.

This is a hands-on role within the organisation, with a good balance between training and support, autonomy and flexibility.

Over the 5 year apprenticeship, you will be taught at UWE and learn key engineering concepts, alongside vital professional skills in management, creative skills in design of civil and structural engineering and systems, practical skills in surveying, geographical information systems (GIS) and computer-aided design (CAD). You will have commitment to meet requirements of the professional training and ensure that all reporting and training documents are completed on time and to the quality standards agreed.

At the end you will gain a BEng (Hons) Civil and Environmental Engineering degree and will be working towards a professional qualification such as Incorporated Engineer (IEng).

You’ll get opportunity to;

•Undertake Civil/Municipal engineer elements, including highways, structures, drainage, traffic management and traffic signals.
•Undertake the design, programming and implementation of engineering projects and schemes.
•Preparation of drawings, calculations, specifications, documents, consultation and publicity material, and scheme cost estimates.
•Arranging and supervising the implementation of schemes, including liaison with contractors and consultants, site supervision, survey and setting out work, and monitoring of scheme expenditure.
•Preparing reports and responding to enquiries and correspondence from MPs, Council Members, Parish Councils, other organisations, and the general public.

We will allocate you a workplace mentor to give you guidance and support throughout your Level 6 Civil Engineering Degree apprenticeship.

What we need from you:

•Must hold a minimum qualification in GCSE English and Maths at grade C or 4/5 and above.
•Minimum of 2 A-level’s with one in Mathematics at Grade C or above or a Level 3 BTEC in Construction and the Built Environment.
•You will have good attention to detail and ability to produce accurate, error free work.
•Have excellent communication skills and be able to work as part of a team contributing to effective service delivery.
•You will have effective IT and numeracy skills including the ability to accurately update information systems and databases.
•Be able to prioritise workloads to meet deadlines according to demand.

Desirable

•Level 4 HNC in a Civil Engineering discipline.

Things we need you to know:

The salary for this apprenticeship is Hay Grade 11: £18,795

You will be based at both our main office in Badminton Road and Broad Lane Depot, Engine Common Lane in Yate. You will complete block release training with UWE, Coldharbour Lane, Frenchay. When you aren’t at UWE, the rest of your time will be spent with us learning on the job.

Please note that you will be expected to undertake a basic skills assessment as part of the selection process.

In addition to your workplace mentor, you will also be allocated an assessor by UWE, who will come to visit you at work to complete reviews. These reviews are simply to make sure you are on track and happy.

You’ll be completing a Level 6 Civil Engineer Degree apprenticeship standard which will provide you with a highly transferable set of knowledge, skills and behaviours, which you gain by working for us.

This apprenticeship also requires you to complete an end point assessment which will see you demonstrate what you have learned as an apprentice and how it can be applied in any other organisation. This will be another chance for you to shine!

The end point assessment consists of a project, interview, written report, written examination and presentation. Sound scary? Don’t worry, we and your assessor will give you plenty of support and encouragement to ensure you are prepared and confident to complete this stage. We also have plenty of apprentices here that can give you tips and help ease any nerves or concerns, because they have done it themselves!

We understand this is a lot of information and this apprenticeship might not be for everyone, but if you’ve read the above and are still excited about this opportunity we would love to hear from you.
