Summary of Post

We are looking to appoint solution focussed and innovative Main Scale Educational Psychologists to join a professional service in South Gloucestershire.

We have a range of options for potential applicants to work on a full time or part time limited term basis, to cover maternity leave, and service expansion and restructure.

We are also looking for Associate Psychologists to work with us on a contractual basis.

The post holder will be based at Patchway or Kingswood Hub.

The South Gloucestershire Educational Psychology Service is well regarded within the Local Authority and is key in achieving better outcomes for children and young people.

The Educational Psychology Service sits within the Education, Learning and Skills Division of the Department for Children Adults and Health.

The EP Service promotes child development and learning through the application of psychology, by working with individuals and groups of children; teachers and other adults in schools; families and other local authority officers; health social care and other agencies.

Main Duties

To support schools to deliver the graduated approach for children, young people and young adults aged 0-25, who may have Special Educational Needs and others about whom there may be a concern as outlined in the Code of Practice 2015. This will be through systemic work, casework, through delivering training and having a good knowledge of evidence informed interventions.

To carry out psychological assessments as part of the EHC needs assessment and Annual Review process.

To lead on an area of interest within the service and contribute to the development of joined up working with other relevant professionals and agencies and have particular expertise in areas that schools would wish to purchase.

Selection Criteria

Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council.

A fully qualified Educational Psychologist has either: An Honours Degree in Psychology - or equivalent acceptable for graduate membership of the British Psychological Society

A recognised teaching qualification, at least two years qualified classroom teaching experience, a Masters qualification in Educational Psychology and current registration with the Health and Care Professions Council Or:

An Honours Degree in Psychology - or equivalent acceptable for graduate membership of the British Psychological Society, considerable experience working with children and/or young people and their families, Doctorate in Educational Psychology and current registration with the Health and Care Professions Council

Experience of working as a main scale Educational Psychologist including:

Proven ability to deliver high quality casework
Ability to think and work strategically
Evidence of innovative practice

Demonstrated expertise in leadership and management of projects/and or teams
Use of initiative to develop project work and develop new areas of the service to sell

Evidence of having developed special interests within the field of Psychology

Knowledge of relevant legislation as it affects schools and early years’ settings in general and EP work in particular

Ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of people, both verbally and in writing

Adaptable, positive and co-operative approach to others, and a creative approach to problem-solving

Proven ability to adapt quickly and to be responsive to external demands, whilst maintaining a good working relationship with colleagues, other professionals and parents

Ability to prioritise workload, to meet deadlines and to conform to administrative requirements

Exemplify the Councils values and behaviours.


Experience of working or delivering a traded Educational Psychology service model

Evidence of further professional development in relevant areas

Use of a vehicle:

The nature of the duties of this post will require you to travel on Council business on a regular basis, so you must either have a current driving licence and provide a car, or have access to appropriate means of travel.

If you use your vehicle on authorised Council business, you will receive a mileage payment based on the Inland Revenue Authorised Mileage Allowance Payment Scheme (AMAPS). The allowance is provided on the condition that your own insurance covers you for business use and indemnifies the Council against claim (including those concerning passengers) arising out of the use of the vehicle on official business. You will also be eligible for a car loan if you meet the criteria within the Council’s Car Loan Scheme.

Salary: £38,296 to £47,434 plus 2 SPA points (pro rata to hours worked if part time)

Hours: A range or permanent, limited term posts are available.
