An opportunity to join the successful structures team who have won a number of awards, including the ICE South West Community Award 2019 and the IHE South West Large Project of the Year award 2018 for the major refurbishment and improvement of the Bromley Heath Viaduct.

You will assist with the design of improvements or strengthening of existing structures and the design of new structures and contribute towards formulating the long term capital programme for our structures assets and contribute towards the inspection programme of our existing structures assets. Supervising the work of other team members, you will provide guidance and mentoring of those team members where necessary and contribute to the on going development of Quality Management processes and procedures.

Main Duties:
• Carry out the structural design for major maintenance, improvement or strengthening of existing structures and the design of new structures using current codes of practice and European standards
• Check the design of and supervise construction of developer promoted structures
• Manage road restraint systems inspections, replacements and improvements
• Prepare Approval in Principle documents in accordance with the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges
• Manage projects within the Council’s overall capital programme.
• Participate in Principal and General Inspections of our Structures Assets
• Carry out asset management activities including calculating replacement costs, lifecycle planning and depreciation modelling
• You will also possess excellent communication skills, and be able to demonstrate the ability to work within a multi-disciplinary environment and manage your own time and meet deadlines.

Essential Criteria:
• Degree, Level 5 NVQ or equivalent in a highways or civil engineering related discipline. You will have membership of an appropriate professional institution
• Experience in the design of highway and open space structures and have significant knowledge of the design Manual for Roads and Bridges and the Manual of Contract Documents for Highway Works
• Carry out the structural design of structures with minimal supervision
• Experience in the inspection of structures being built to ensure they comply with approved drawings/designs/specifications and able to inspect road restraint systems or defects and compliance, specify improvements or replacement and procure and supervise specialists carrying out any works
• Supervise the work of technical staff to help deliver the work of the Structures team.
• Demonstrate experience of dealing with external agencies and partners in relation to structural engineering matters
• Good level of IT literacy and be familiar with software such as TEDDS, Superstress, Advance Design, Archie-M, Scale, AutoCAD, MapInfo and Microsoft Office products

Desirable Criteria:
• Able to assist with the monitoring of budgets
• Ability to carry out topographical surveys

Additional Information:
The post holder will be required to travel, for example to construction sites and other offices, and will therefore need a current driving licence. Using your vehicle on council business: if you use your vehicle on authorised council business, you can claim a mileage payment based on HM Revenue and Customs authorised mileage allowance payment scheme (AMAPS). .
