Summary of post

This is a fantastic opportunity for a self-motivated media and communications individual who is looking to progress their career.

Working in small media office, your role as External Communication Officer will be to ensure that South Gloucestershire Council’s reputation is protected and enhanced through building and maintaining a proactive and reactive relationship with the media. You will use a broad range of communications channels that include broadcast, print and digital to ensure we communicate openly and honestly with our residents, businesses and stakeholders.

We issue more than 150 press releases and deal with 1,500 media enquires every year. You will need to be able to deal with internal and external requests in a timely and efficient manner.

We are looking for someone who is politically astute, who can provide party neutral advice. Also an excellent team player who would thrive given the opportunity to be part of the voice of South Gloucestershire Council.

Post holder duties

• Undertaking high quality copy writing of news releases and other content as required

• Responding promptly to media enquiries, working to tight deadlines and dealing with elected members and senior officers to identify media spokespersons and agree responses under the supervision of the Senior External Communications Officer

• Working closely with the political Administration (Cabinet) of the council to provide non-party political communications advice and communicate council decisions and campaigns under the supervision of the Senior External Communications Officer.

• Supporting the delivery of the agreed media and external relations strategy and campaign plans.




• Preparing for and attending key council meetings, wherever possible, including Cabinet, Full Council and other committee meetings to identify and monitor items that may attract media interest

• Working closely with other disciplines within the communications team and council departments to gather information and news quickly in order to respond to media enquiries, or for use in proactive media and external relations activity

• Organising media events, as required (for example, press briefings, photo opportunities)

• Support the effective running of our media office from 9am to 5pm Monday -Thursday and 9am to 4.30pm Fridays. In addition, occasional out of hours support required in the event of a major incident.

• Supporting the Senior External Communications Officer in a crisis/major incident with reputation management, as directed.


Selection criteria

Essential

• Proven experience in communications, PR and/or journalism in similar roles.
• Media relations experience, including responses to media enquiries, organising media events (e.g. press briefings and photo calls), media monitoring, copywriting media materials (e.g. news releases and briefing notes), evidence of work with local and regional media (across print, TV and digital).
• Good copywriting skills for a range of audiences and purposes (e.g. news releases and other media content, reports, leaflets, content for websites)
• Good interpersonal skills - able to maintain effective working relationships at all levels
• Able to prioritise and work to tight deadlines
• Experience of event organising (e.g. press briefings)

Desirable

• Media relations, communications and engagement experience gained within a public sector / local government setting
• An understanding of the issues facing local government
• Experience of working with external stakeholders (e.g. the public, partner organisations)
• Ideally educated to degree level or equivalent
• Relevant professional qualification (e.g. CIPR or CAM) preferred – this may be a qualification towards which the candidate is currently working

About the team
The strategic communications team brings together social marketing and campaigns, media handling, external relations, internal communications and creative design into a central, business focused team. Strategic communications provides advice, guidance and hands-on delivery of professional communication, PR and marketing services across the organisation.

Salary: £28,221 - £30,756

Hours: 37 hours
