An exciting new apprenticeship opportunity has become available in the Transport Services team as a Heavy Vehicle Mechanic apprentice.

You will be part of a team responsible for the service, repair and inspection of all items within the council’s diverse fleet of vehicles and equipment and also from associated organisations and external customers. You will be trained and learn how to play a critical role within the team in ensuring the maintenance and testing occurs in a timely and efficient manner.

The vehicle maintenance team is based at Broad Lane Depot, Yate but you may be required to operate from any of the council depots.

The role will involve dealing with repair and maintenance vehicles of a larger scale. This apprenticeship will enable you to become a fully qualified HGV Technician within an industry leading commercial vehicle workshop on successful completion of the apprenticeship training. This is a 3 year apprenticeship where you will receive supervision, guidance and support from your workplace supervisor and a workplace mentor.

You will complete a Level 2 in Heavy Vehicle Mechanics over a 2 year period that will consist of 10 two week blocks of delivery. On successful completion of the Level 2 you will complete the Level 3 in Heavy Vehicle Mechanics that will consist of 5 two week blocks of delivery over one year. The class based delivery will take place at the Parkway Centre, New Road, Stoke Gifford, Bristol, BS34 8SF.

Please note that you will be expected to undertake a basic skills assessment as part of the selection process. This will be emailed to you and must be completed by Friday 2nd November 2018.

Main Duties

To carry out running repairs, defect rectification, servicing and inspections. MOT test preparation, quality checks, other repairs and attending breakdowns as required and directed.

To identify necessary repairs and determine effective methods of rectification.

To ensure vehicles and plant items are safe and in a roadworthy condition when work has been finalised and quality standards achieved.

To maintain good levels of housekeeping within the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work act.

To meet established performance targets and participate in maximising the division’s efficiency.

To identify correct spare parts requirements and requisition as required.

To complete all documentation relevant to the role i.e. daily/weekly time recording, vehicle/plant job cards and records, servicing sheets, defect reports including MOT documentation and procedures and any other as required including data input as necessary.

Must hold a minimum qualification of 3 grade C’s at GCSE including English, Maths, or equivalent or be willing to work towards Level 2 in English and Maths.

Have the right attitude, work ethic and commitment to college work and gaining your qualification as well as your employment.

Have a passion for vehicles and have a natural mechanical ability.


Full manual driving licence (age dependant).

08:00 – 16:00 Monday – Thursday

08:00 – 15:30 Friday

This is a limited term contract for 3 years. You must be able to get to your location of work in Broad Lane, Yate and training provider for block release learning at the Parkway Centre, New Road, Stoke Gifford, Bristol, BS34 8SF.

South Gloucestershire Council are investing £12,000 to cover the cost of the training.
