As our apprentice your affinity for mathematics and attention to detail will be a welcome addition to our team at South Gloucestershire Council who are making a real difference to the lives of the people who live, work and learn here.

We’ve achieved a great deal, but were ambitious about the future. Join us and be part of something bigger.

How you’ll make a difference

As our apprentice you’ll support and contribute towards the physical construction of a wide variety of features including, site clearance, fencing, drainage, earthworks, pavements, kerbing, footways, block paving, traffic signs, road markings and retaining walls.

We will allocate you a workplace mentor to give you guidance and support throughout your 2 year apprenticeship and completion of a Level 2 in Highways Maintenance Skilled Operative.

What we need from you:

•Ideally hold a minimum qualification in GCSE English and Maths at grade D or 3 and above, or Level 1 Functional Skills in English and Math’s. If you do not have these you must be willing to undertake and gain Functional Skills in English and Maths as part of the apprenticeship.
•Ability to work in a team
•Attention to detail
•Willingness to learn
•Self-motivated and organised
•Have good communication skills with ability to provide good customer service

If you have the skills we need and want to put them to good use to make a difference for the people of South Gloucestershire, you are the apprentice for us!

Things we need you to know:

Hours of work are fixed with the following shift pattern:

07:45am to 4.30pm Monday to Thursday
07:45am to 3.30pm Friday

The salary for this apprenticeship is set at the current National Minimum Wage;

Hourly rate
Aged 25+ £8.72

As part of this training route you do need to undertake a basic skills assessment as part of the selection process. These will be emailed to you by the training provider, Telford College, and be completed by the deadline set.

The apprenticeship training requires you to attend block release throughout the year and you must be willing to travel to the provider’s location, Telford College, Haybridge Road, Wellington, Telford, Shropshire, TF1 2NP. We will cover your travel and accommodation expenses.

When you aren’t at college, the rest of your time will be spent with us learning on the job.

In addition to your workplace mentor, you will also be allocated an assessor by Telford College, to complete reviews. These reviews are simply to make sure you are on track and happy.

You’ll be completing a Level 2 in Highways Maintenance Skilled Operative apprenticeship standard which will provide you with a highly transferable set of knowledge, skills and behaviours, which you gain by working for us.

This apprenticeship also requires you to complete an end point assessment which will see you demonstrate what you have learned as an apprentice and how it can be applied in any other organisation. This will be another chance for you to shine!

The end point assessment consists of a Knowledge Test and Practical Skills Assessment. Sound scary? Don’t worry, we and your assessor will give you plenty of support and encouragement to ensure you are prepared and confident to complete this stage. We also have plenty of apprentices here that can give you tips and help ease any nerves or concerns, because they have done it themselves!

We understand this is a lot of information and this apprenticeship might not be for everyone, but if you’ve read the above and are still excited about this opportunity we would love to hear from you.
