The StreetCare Design and Operations Team are looking for 3 enthusiastic apprentices to join their frontline team contributing to the delivery of Highways work. The Highways Apprentices will undertake the delivery of frontline highway maintenance, civil engineering and structural engineering schemes throughout South Gloucestershire.

You will be based in one of our experienced construction teams undertaking the physical construction a wide variety of features including, site clearance, fencing, drainage, earthworks, pavements, kerbing, footways, block paving, traffic signs, road markings and retaining walls.

As an apprentice you will receive guidance and supervision from your workplace supervisor. You will also have a workplace mentor to support you. This is a limited term contract for 24 months, where you will undertake a Level 2 Highways Maintenance Skilled Operative Apprenticeship. This involves residential training with the selected provider, Telford College, for 1 week every month for the first 6 months which will be repeated at a later stage in the academic year. The remainder of your time will be spent on the job learning.

Main Duties

To assist in highways maintenance, civil engineering and structural engineering works

Undertake general manual labouring work, assisting in excavations and reinstatements

Future progression to assisting in specialist practices such as fencing, drainage, earthworks, asphalt mixes, kerbing, landscaping, structures and temporary traffic management

Be responsible for your own safety on site as well as your fellow workers and the general public

Adhere to directed safe methods of work at all times.

Selection Criteria

Essential

• Ideally hold a minimum qualification in GCSE English and Maths at grade D or 3 and above, or Level 1 Functional Skills in English and Math’s. If you do not have these you must be willing to undertake and gain Functional Skills in English and Maths as part of the apprenticeship.

• Ability to work in a team

• Attention to detail

• Willingness to learn

• Self-motivated and organised

• Have good communication skills with ability to provide good customer service

Desirable

• Full UK driving licence as some roles may require some travelling

Additional Information

Interviews will take place on the 12th and 14th June 2019.

You need to ensure you are able to get to place of work each day, which is predominantly Broad Lane, Engine Common Lane, Yate, Bristol, BS37 7PN.

You must also be willing and able to both stay and travel to the training provider location, Telford College, Haybridge Road, Wellington TF1 2NP. Travel and accommodation costs covered by the Council.

This is a limited term contract for 24 months.

Hours of work are fixed with the following shift pattern:

07:45am to 4.30pm Monday to Thursday
07:45am to 3.30pm Friday

The Council will be investing £9,000 per apprentice to cover the cost of the training.
