Summary of Post

Breakthrough Mentoring is a well-established award winning programme that supports vulnerable children and adults across South Gloucestershire. Working with people with complex needs is both rewarding and challenging and we are looking for current Breakthrough Mentors who would like an opportunity to develop their existing skills.

This post is offered as a zero hour contract and we are ideally looking for current Mentors who are willing to step up during busy periods on an adhoc basis.

The co-ordinator role can include work outside of normal office hours and flexibility is a vital quality as the service reacts to quickly changing circumstances. You will need to have strong communication skills and an approach that builds relationships with service users, carers and professionals.

The post reports to the Breakthrough Manager. Key responsibilities will involve supervising mentors, co-ordinating placements, attending service user meetings and adhoc project related work.

This post is restricted to permanent and temporary employees of South Gloucestershire Council only.

Interviews due to take w/c 26 November 2018.

A DBS is required for this post.

Main Duties

Planning & coordination of placements.

Liaise with mentees and parents.

Monitoring of placements and gather evidence of impact.

Support the development of mentors.

Supporting role at mentor training days.

Administering associated paper work including invoicing and data, communicating and working with partners to ensure quality outcomes.

Attending multi-disciplinary meetings to represent Breakthrough and our mentees.

Attend team meetings.

Selection Criteria

Substantial experience of working with vulnerable and socially excluded people including challenging behaviour.

Have an understanding of Safeguarding policies and procedures.

Have good relationship building and communication skills.

Able to demonstrate problem solving under pressure in difficult situations and resolve day to day problems using your own initiative.

Well organised and able to keep accurate records and data using excellent administration skills.

A good understanding of IT.

Full driver’s license.

Exemplifying the Council's values and behaviours.


Qualification in working with young people education or social care.

You will have experience of matching mentors with mentees within a mentoring scheme.

You will have experience of supervising others.

Use of a vehicle

If the nature of the duties require you to travel on Council business on a regular basis, so you must either have a current driving licence and provide a car, or have access to appropriate means of travel.

If you use your vehicle on authorised Council business, you will receive a mileage payment based on the Inland Revenue Authorised Mileage Allowance Payment Scheme (AMAPS). The allowance is provided on the condition that your own insurance covers you for business use and indemnifies the Council against claim (including those concerning passengers) arising out of the use of the vehicle on official business. You will also be eligible for a car loan if you meet the criteria within the Council’s Car Loan Scheme.
