How you’ll make a difference
You will make a difference as a Planning Officer by making South Gloucestershire a better place to live, visit and work in, by contributing towards a high quality built environment for the enjoyment of all residents and our visitors.

What does a typical day look like?
You will answer general enquiries including pre-application advice and be responsible for examining, processing and evaluating planning and related applications.
A key part of the role is to undertake site inspections, negotiations and preparation of reports to the committee or under officer delegation arrangements in order to implement the Council’s land use and transport policies through individual decisions in applications.
Using your skills and experience you will prepare written appeal statements, and present evidence at hearings, public inquiries and at court proceedings.
The nature of the duties of this post will require you to travel on Council business on a regular basis, so you must either have a current driving license and provide a car, or have access to appropriate means of travel.

- We trust our team to work in the way which allows them to make the biggest difference and we continue to invest in technology to help staff do their jobs to the best of their ability and celebrate innovation.
- What’s special here is the strength of the team ethos, the support and the training.

What we need from you:
You will have a degree or equivalent qualification, or equivalent relevant experience or hold/be working towards a relevant professional/technical qualification.
Relevant practical experience; backed by evidence of appropriate specialist knowledge and be able to determine your own priorities in dealing with competing workloads

Ideally you will have the ability to be able to understand and use scaled drawings and maps and some relevant experience in the use of electronic mapping (GIS) and database systems would be desirable, or the demonstrable ability to learn these skills is essential.

Our teams at South Gloucestershire Council are making a real difference to the lives of people who live, work and learn here.
We're building and shaping communities which people are proud of
We're planning for the future; building and improving the roads, railways, schools, green spaces, and houses.
