Vinney Green Secure Unit opened in February 1995, and accommodates 24 young people of both sexes, aged between 10 and 18. The Unit has been designed to a very high standard and is structured to provide physical containment in an environment which is comfortable and attractive. Vinney Green Secure Unit offers young people a safe and caring environment, where they experience quality care, education, recreational facilities, vocational and life skills training.

Under the general direction of either the Headteacher or Deputy Headteacher to lead, organise and develop engagement in Physical Education, supporting the overall educational and developmental needs of the young people in the Unit. To undertake management and maintenance of classroom resources within the subject area. Contribute to the supervision and welfare of the young people.


Main duties:

The particular duties of the Instructor will be determined by the Headteacher or Deputy Headteacher and will be arranged to meet the needs of the Unit and the young people being supported. This may include working with young people with an Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP). Sessions may be undertaken within the classroom or in an alternative location.

a) To take a lead role in assessing, delivering and guidance in specified learning, developmental or welfare activities to individuals or groups of pupils within an agreed system of supervision. This will include the delivery of relevant activities to classes, groups or individual pupils without a teacher being present.

b) To lead the PE subject area and be responsible for the learning and development programmes for pupils either as a group or individually; which may include work towards relevant/suitable qualifications to include GCSE.

c) To plan, develop resources and deliver lessons to classes or groups of pupils, up to four at a time as subject leader, where this is appropriate. This needs to take account of the unstable / unpredictable learning environment.

d) To cover sessions arising from staff absence, which are often due to unforeseen circumstances.

e) To provide the Head teacher or Deputy Head Teacher with appropriate feedback and reports on pupil achievement, progress and development, informing any relevant 3rd parties in line with Unit policy and procedures. Contribute to documentation such as behaviour management records and young persons’ daily logs.

f) To promote the inclusion and acceptance of all pupils within the learning environment.

g) To use ICT, teaching materials, resources and aids effectively to support learning activities and to develop pupils’ competence and independence in their use. To ensure equipment is stored, maintained and safe to use, in line with Health and Safety procedures and policies.

h) To select, prepare and/or modify resources; appropriate to designated learning activities.

i) To support the social development and welfare needs of individual pupils in
accordance with Unit practices and policies.

j) Within the context of the whole Unit to contribute to the production and preparation of learning and display materials, including the preparation and/or modification of materials to meet the needs of groups of young people or individual young people. This includes cross-curricular involvement in e.g. Non Uniform Days, delivery of PSHE during tutor times and supporting delivery of group work sessions.

k) To understand and respond positively to the physical, emotional and/or behavioural needs of young people and to encourage participation and independence. This may involve responding to incidents within the unit and during escorting / mobility duties.

l) To support young people with special educational needs and / or EAL through delivery of appropriate aspects of the Individual Education Plan / EHCP if required.

m) To contribute to effective team practice by attending and participating as appropriate, in staff meetings and in-service training.

n) To promote and reinforce the Units policies, practices and procedures, including an understanding of child protection, safeguarding and health and safety responsibilities. To carry out / implement dynamic risk assessments.



Selection Criteria:

Essential Criteria:
• A good standard of general education, to include literacy and numeracy skills equivalent to NVQ2 in English and Maths.

• Good interpersonal skills with both adults and young people.

• NVQ 3 or other relevant qualification with some practical experience of working with young people, or;

• Considerable experience of working with young people in an educational context with evidence of relevant training in the appropriate age range or curriculum/learning area.

• Ability to use ICT effectively to support young people’ learning.

• Must be willing to undertake further professional development.

• You must have experience of, or be prepared to work in accordance with the Council’s safeguarding policies and procedures.

Desirable Criteria:

• Knowledge of relevant legislation for e.g. Child Protection and Safeguarding , Equality and Diversity, First Aid training and Restrictive Physical
Intervention (RPI)

• Working with professional partners, parents, contractors etc.

• Experience of supervision of staff / visitors.

• Monitoring of spending within Department budget

Special Notes or Conditions:

Please note as per Children’s Homes National Minimum Standards a worker aged 23 or older is required for this post.

The Council is committed to safeguarding and promoting the safety and welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults.

Please note that it is a requirement of employment that an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is obtained for this post. This means that you must declare any criminal convictions, cautions, reprimands or final warnings unless these are ‘protected’ as defined by the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) order 1975 (as amended in 2013).

Use of a vehicle

If you use your vehicle on authorised Council business, you will receive a mileage payment based on the Inland Revenue Authorised Mileage Allowance Payment Scheme (AMAPS). The allowance is provided on the condition that your own insurance covers you for business use and indemnifies the Council against claim (including those concerning passengers) arising out of the use of the vehicle on official business. You will also be eligible for a car loan if you meet the criteria within the Council’s Car Loan Scheme.

A Secure Unit is a closed facility and movement is governed by the controlled unlocking of electronic doors.

The environment can become tense and anxiety provoking given that young people are detained.

Young people can present physically threatening behaviour.

Surveillance cameras are in use in most areas of the building.

Once on duty, there will be no opportunity to leave the building.

VGSU is a no smoking environment, and there is no provision to facilitate smoking.

Staff will be expected to adopt an appropriate and safe standard of dress (including jewellery).

Staff’s personal belongings are required to be left in a provided locker on entry into the building.

There is a requirement for staff to make a monthly contribution towards the beverages provided by the unit, which is deducted at source.

It is essential that you are fit to carry out Physical Intervention techniques for which full training will be given.

This post is also subject to a medical clearance, which is satisfactory to management.

In the future there may be a requirement to undertake further physical fitness checks.

This post is subject to a Disqualification from Working with Children declaration.
