Vinney Green Secure Unit opened in February 1995, and accommodates 24 young people of both sexes, aged between 10 and 18. The Unit has been designed to a very high standard and is structured to provide physical containment in an environment which is comfortable and attractive. Vinney Green Secure Unit offers young people a safe and caring environment, where they experience quality care, education, recreational facilities, vocational and life skills training.

Responsible to the Facilities Manager for maintaining a high standard of cleanliness and service, the successful candidate will become part of a professional team, assisting the Cooks with basic food preparation, service of meals, washing up (including the use of a dishwasher) and ensuring the sound delivery and safe storage of food.

Previous catering experience would be an advantage, but is not essential, as training will be given, including Foundation Food Hygiene training.

Main duties

To assist in the preparation of all food and beverages to ensure choice of menu.

To assist in the preparation of all dietary, ethnic and other special menu and to ensure a safe environment.

To assist in the provision of the service of all food and beverages and to ensure a safe environment.

To ensure that young people and other service users have every opportunity to request their preferred choice of food, and that access is available throughout the 24-hour period.

To assist in the routine cleaning schedule of all food storage and preparation areas including service areas, equipment and utensils throughout the Unit.

To assist in the checking of incoming goods for quality and quantity, and storing accordingly.

To assist and advise accordingly in the ordering of supplies, safe storage, and the rotation of stock including any relevant recording.

To assist in the monitoring and documenting of all daily temperature recording including any other documentation as required by policy and procedures.

The observance of all Food Hygiene policy and legislation.

The safe operation of mechanical, gas and electrical catering equipment.

To report any unsafe practices or equipment to the Duty Cook and/or the Facilities Manager.

To report to the Duty Cook and/or Facilities Manager any unusual eating habits of young people.

To assist in maintaining a high standard of cleanliness throughout the Unit as set down by our policy and procedures. This may include the cleaning and replenishment duties associated with bedrooms, offices, classrooms, and other general areas including toilets.

To observe all Health & Safety policies and legislation

To carry out such other duties as are required and are commensurate with the grade of the post

Selection Criteria:

Essential Criteria

NVQ level 1 or a commitment to undertake this qualification

Previous experience within a kitchen setting

Experience of working in a multi-racial environment, or of working with people from other minority ethnic groups

Some Food preparation and / or service experience

Some cleaning experience, preferably within a catering environment

Able to work as part of a team

Desirable Criteria

Basic Food Hygiene Certificate

Knowledge of Health and Safety issues

Knowledge of Food Hygiene requirements

Ability to use some mechanical equipment both large and small e.g. dishwasher, mixer/blender, knife

Ability to demonstrate patience, tolerance and understanding as you will be working within a secure environment with Young People who may show anti-social and behavioural problems

If you use your vehicle on authorised Council business, you will receive a mileage payment based on the Inland Revenue Authorised Mileage Allowance Payment Scheme (AMAPS). The allowance is provided on the condition that your own insurance covers you for business use and indemnifies the Council against claim (including those concerning passengers) arising out of the use of the vehicle on official business. You will also be eligible for a car loan if you meet the criteria within the Council’s Car Loan Scheme.

Candidates must be able to work shifts, weekends and bank holidays.

Annual leave must be taken in conjunction with the needs of the secure service.

A Secure Unit is a closed facility and movement is governed by the controlled unlocking of electronic doors.

The environment can become tense and anxiety provoking given that young people are detained.

Young people can present physically threatening behaviour.

Surveillance cameras are in use in most areas of the building.

Once on duty, there will be no opportunity to leave the building.

VGSU is a no smoking environment, and there is no provision to facilitate smoking.

Staff will be expected to adopt an appropriate and safe standard of dress (including jewellery).

Staff’s personal belongings are required to be left in a provided locker on entry into the building.

NB: A Secure Unit Allowance is payable in recognition of the ‘closed’ nature of the facility.

This post is also subject to a medical clearance, which is satisfactory to management.

In the future there may be a requirement to undertake further physical fitness checks.

This post is subject to a Disqualification from Working with Children declaration.

There is a requirement for staff to make a monthly contribution towards the beverages provided by the unit, which is deducted at source.

This post is subject to the successful completion of the General Services Breakaway training course.

Salary: Hay 12, £18,426 per annum, pro rata, plus Sunday and Bank Holiday enhancements and £2,284 Secure Unit Allowance per annum pro rata

Hours: You will work an average of 16 hours per week, which is based on a 7 days on/7 days off rota and includes weekends and Bank Holidays. The actual hours required are 14.00 to 18.00 on weekdays and 12.00 to 18.00 on weekends.
