South Gloucestershire Council are seeking a customer focused apprentice to work within the Library Service. This role will involve working 4 days a week at Bradley Stoke Library, plus alternate Saturday mornings.

As an apprentice you will welcome all library customers and identify their individual needs, to provide a quality service and enable customers to make full use of the facilities available. You will also support the systems and policies for the loan and management of stock, including self-service and use a variety of resources to provide information, including online services.

There is opportunity for you to take part in the creation, organisation and running of promotional activities and outreach work, as directed by the Library Supervisor; this will include working with children both within the library and in external settings.

Over the duration of the 13 month apprenticeship you will receive supervision, guidance and support from your workplace supervisor and a workplace mentor to help you develop the skills needed to carry out a variety of duties competently and effectively. You will also complete a Level 2 in Business Administration which will involve a weekly day release to SGS College on a Wednesday.

Please note that you will be expected to undertake a basic skills assessment as part of the selection process. These will take place at SGS College, Filton Avenue, Filton, Bristol, BS34 7AT week commencing 7th January 2019.

Main Tasks

Assist with providing and delivering services, to all sections of the community, for example, services to children and older people.

Use the library management system and self-service equipment.

Participate in the preparation of new materials, and the maintenance of existing stock through the repair and withdrawal of older materials as directed.

Assist with requests and enquiries which are made either by telephone, email, in writing or face-to-face by searching information through computerised and non-computerised resources.

Help the public use IT and information resources.

Ensure the good order and general tidiness of the service point including the sorting and shelving of materials in the appropriate sequence and assisting with promotions and displays.

Take part in a wide range of promotional activities and outreach work with all ages, including active involvement in rhyme and story times, undertaking craft sessions, hosting reading groups, organising author events, making school visits and visiting community centres.

Handle cash and other receipts and assist with recording, balancing and banking as required or directed.

Selection Criteria

Essential

Must hold a minimum of 3 GCSE A*-C (or Grade 4-9) or equivalent qualification in English and Maths or be willing to work towards gaining a Level 2 in English and Maths

Excellent IT skills being able to use the internet, social media, ICT equipment and a variety of computer packages, such as Microsoft Office, Outlook and Excel.

Excellent communication skills and ability to work as part of a team.

Enthusiasm for books, multimedia and promotion of reading.

Demonstrate experience or ability to undertake enquiry work and find information.

Additional Information

Ability to undertake the physical aspects of the job including shelving and counter work; lifting and carrying of books and other materials.

You may be asked to work at other library locations and assist with community events as appropriate.

Interviews will take place on the 17th January 2019.

This apprentice is for 30 hours per week and is a limited term contract for 13 months.
