Further information

How you’ll make a difference
You will make a difference as a Planning Assistant by making South Gloucestershire a better place to live, visit and work in, by contributing towards a high quality built environment for the enjoyment of all residents and our visitors.

What does a typical day look like?
You will be responsible for delivering excellent customer service by issuing pre-application advice and determining the more straightforward planning applications.
Liaising with elected members, Town and Parish Councils, colleagues, applicants and residents you will ensure that high quality planning decisions are made.
As part of your responsibilities, you will examine, process and evaluate minor planning and related applications, including site inspections, negotiations and preparation of reports to the committee, or reports under the officer delegation arrangements.
The nature of the duties of this post will require you to travel on Council business on a regular basis, so you must either have a current driving license and provide a car, or have access to appropriate means of travel.

How a career at South Gloucestershire Council is different
- We value our staff as individuals, investing in their careers and we are recognised for the quality, breadth and depth of our training and development offer, which helps make the greatest long-term difference in work.
- We trust our team to work in the way which allows them to make the biggest difference and we continue to invest in technology to help staff do their jobs to the best of their ability and celebrate innovation.
- What’s special here is the strength of the team ethos, the support and the training.

What we need from you:
You will be educated to degree level or equivalent preferably in Town Planning. If not in Town Planning, knowledge/experience of development control objectives, procedures and planning law, plus willingness for further training or substantial equivalent practical experience of working in front line customer service delivery.
Ideally, you will have the ability to be able to understand and use scaled drawings and maps and some relevant experience in the use of electronic mapping (GIS) and database systems would be desirable, or the demonstrable ability to learn these skills is essential.
You will have knowledge of legislation and current issues facing planning.

Our teams at South Gloucestershire Council are making a real difference to the lives of people who live, work and learn here.
We're building and shaping communities which people are proud of
We're planning for the future; building and improving the roads, railways, schools, green spaces, and houses.
We've achieved a great deal, but we need talented and dedicated people to ensure we continue to make a difference.

We’re making a difference: be part of it!
