How you’ll make a difference

You will make a difference as a Principal Planning Officer by making South Gloucestershire a better place to live, visit and work in, by personally contributing towards a high quality built environment for the enjoyment of all residents and our visitors. You will get reward in enabling and helping more junior team members to grow and develop and progress their planning careers.

What will you be doing?

You will be responsible for interpreting performance management data; and assist with day to day supervision of staff; undertaking regular 1:1 and Professional Development Progress Review meetings.

When it is required you will be deputising for the Development Management Team Manager and handling concerns, complaints and FOI requests in accordance with Council Procedures and time scales.

You will provide technical expertise in the delivery of the Council’s spatial planning and other corporate policy objectives, through the determination of delegated planning applications, assisting with policy formulation, the preparation and presentation of reports to the Development Control Committee, the Spatial Planning Committee and Sites Inspection Sub-Committee.

It will be your responsibility to prepare responses to appeals which could include written reports and appearing at hearings and Public Inquiries.

The nature of the duties of this post will require you to travel on Council business on a regular basis, so you must either have a current driving license and provide a car, or have access to appropriate means of travel.

What we need from you:

You will have an appropriate Degree relative to Town and Country Planning and full Membership of the Royal Town Planning Institute or other relevant professional; body.

Substantial experience of working to plan and deliver activity in relevant services in order to meet statutory requirements within the service areas.
Comprehensive knowledge of the relevant legislation and regulatory framework for the provision of the Development Management service.

Experience of negotiation, organising effective consultation and participation with representatives of the public, community groups, the business community and other interested parties.
