Summary of Post

Under the general supervision of the Senior Recovery Officer, as part of a team of Officers collecting outstanding Council tax and Business Rates debts.

The candidate should have 3 GCSEs at Grade C or above or equivalent, including Maths and English and experience in a revenues. The candidate should have excellent communication skills and be able to work well within a team and on own initiative.

Main Duties

To determine the most appropriate method of enforcement in respect of Council Tax and Business Rates liability orders by reference to debtors’ financial circumstances and in accordance with legislation, case law and internal guidelines.

To deal with all aspects of recovery related correspondence, telephone and personal enquiries from debtors in accordance with the customer care principles of the Division.

Monitor accounts ensuring that any arrangements to pay are being adhered to.

Attend the Magistrates Court at least once a month to assist taxpayers who have been summoned to court for non-payment.

Assist the senior recovery officer with all aspects of the committal process.

Selection Criteria

• Experience gained from working in a Revenues.

• 3 GCSE’s at Grade C or above or equivalent, including Maths and English

• Able to demonstrate self-motivation, with the ability to work as part of a team, but also to work individually to meet
• legislative and office procedures and objectives

• Excellent communication skills both oral and in writing

• Experience of handling and controlling difficult situations

• The ability to understand, explain and implement legislation.

• Demonstrate a high level of customer care skills

• Good negotiation skills

• High level keyboard skills

• Significant experience of using Microsoft Office suite.

• Exemplifying the Council's values and behaviours.


• NVQ in Customer Care level 3

• Knowledge of Revenues legislation and practices
