Summary of Post


Full time, social work assistant post available based at the Patchway Hub in South Gloucestershire.

Working in a social care long term team, under the supervision of the Senior Social Worker, the post holder will work closely with children and families to provide key elements of social work which complement and support the full range of services provided.

The post holder will perform defined pieces of work under the direction of a qualified Social Worker who will have assessed each case and decided what services are required, which will include individual pieces of direct work with children and young people. The cases may include family support, child protection, children in need and children looked after.

The Social Work Assistant will typically be working with different people as part of a plan set by a Social Worker who will have assessed the case and decided what interventions are required.

Main Duties

Arrange and attend supervised contact.

Assist with transport arrangement for children and young people in foster placements.

To complete direct work with children/young people

Take action to refer issues as necessary in accordance with Safeguarding Procedures in order to protect vulnerable children or young people.

Provide information to support and improve service provision.

Liaise and work with external contacts e.g. health agencies, emergency services ensuring that communication is effective.

Maintain confidential reports and case notes in accordance with Council guidelines and childcare procedures.

Contribute to assessments under the direction of the senior social worker.

You will provide advice and guidance to service users. You will build effective relationships with colleagues and internal and external customers communicating, empathising and influencing them.


Selection Criteria

Essential

Educated to GCSE level or equivalent, and considerable experience of working in a children and families service, which should include an assessment function, service provision and experience of preparing written records and reports

Effective verbal and written communication skills

Awareness and experience of dynamic risk assessment whilst preparing for and performing a task, and ability to take appropriate action as a result of risks identified (for example to deal with any risk identified during a supervised contact visit)

Experience and/or knowledge of child protection issues

Knowledge of childcare legislation

Exemplify the Council's values and behaviours


Desirable

Relevant qualification to NVQ3 level or equivalent

This means that you must declare any criminal convictions, cautions, reprimands or final warnings unless these are ‘protected’ as defined by the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) order 1975 (as amended in 2013).

If you use your vehicle on authorised Council business, you will receive a mileage payment based on the Inland Revenue Authorised Mileage Allowance Payment Scheme (AMAPS). The allowance is provided on the condition that your own insurance covers you for business use and indemnifies the Council against claim (including those concerning passengers) arising out of the use of the vehicle on official business. You will also be eligible for a car loan if you meet the criteria within the Council’s Car Loan Scheme.
