Summary of Post

We are seeking an experienced Social Worker or Advanced Social Worker to join our Family Placement Team, in the role of a part time SGO Social Worker.

The South Gloucestershire Family Placement Team is based at our main office at Badminton Road, Yate.

The role requires you to work closely alongside Special Guardians and the children they care for.

The role will be working alongside an experienced SGO Social Worker and the management oversight sits within the connected carers part of the Family Placement Team. As a team member you will receive regular reflective supervision from your Team Manager, which will include support for your own development and training was well as case discussions.

South Gloucestershire has a strong commitment to ensuring children can thrive within their own immediate or extended families. This includes exploring, promoting and supporting connected care options where possible.

South Gloucestershire is a relatively small authority with a comparatively low population of children in care. However the use of Special Guardianship Orders is higher than some of our comparators, with the focus of SGO support to strengthen families to manage periods of challenge and stress with the view that families will ultimately be able to thrive alongside universal services.

We strive to ensure that all children and young people subject to Special Guardianship Orders meet their full potential and have opportunities to achieve their best.

The team work closely with our colleagues in our locality teams and colleagues in fostering.

As a case holding SGO social worker you will be expected to travel, as some children and young people placed under SGOs live out of the local area.

South Gloucestershire Council are committed to the use Signs of Safety and this is incorporated into all work and reports undertaken. As an employee you will be given support and training in its use.


Please note, a minimum of 2 years post qualification experience in a statutory social work setting is required. We are unable to consider applications from ASYE's at this time.
Social Workers are usually initially appointed to the salary range: £28,221 - £30,756 however, if you already meet the Advanced Social Worker criteria we can appoint to the salary range: £31,401 - £34,106. Main Duties

Carry out the duties and responsibilities under relevant legislation as prescribed by the Team Manager.

Manage a controlled caseload of families which will be shared with the experienced SGO Social Worker already in post.

A summary of the main duties includes:

- Working closely with the Access and Response Team (ART) and South Gloucestershire’s Locality teams to meet with potential SGO carers and to discuss with the allocated Social Workers any potential support needs of the prospective SGO carers.
- SGO Support covers a wide spectrum, from weekly contacts when necessary to more practical and less frequent phone support. This support includes advice regarding birth family contact, considering the therapeutic needs of children and their carers, responding to complex behaviours, and coordinating claims via the Adoption Support Fund (ASF) for specific interventions.
- The work will include completing visits to Special Guardians, and although the majority of our families reside in South Gloucestershire this may include out of area visits.
- The completion of SGO support assessments, including gaining the views and wishes of children and young people and incorporating their views into your daily work.
- The role also includes an exciting opportunity to help plan and facilitate monthly SGO Coffee Mornings.
- Joint work with education and attending school meetings.
- Some opportunities for court work including the completion of Section 7 Reports relating to birth family contact.


Take responsibility for the continuing professional development of self and contribute towards the professional development of others.

Contribute to the development of services, policies, practices which optimise life chances for children and young people through the medium of involvement in teams and working with colleagues in other Departments/Agencies.

Selection Criteria

Essential

It is essential to hold a recognised qualification in Social Work (DipSW, CQSW, or equivalent)

You will have well developed interpersonal and communication skills to build relationships and engage successfully with contacts and customers.

You will have relevant experience of working in similar service areas.

You will have a good level of general IT skills and the ability to use, or be trained in the use of, appropriate specialist in house software packages.

You will demonstrate knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations, codes of practice, processes and procedures.

If relevant: you will have a proven ability to supervise and allocate work to others, monitoring their performance and taking corrective action.

Full clean driver’s licence and access to a car (or able to use another appropriate means of travel) to travel to a range of locations including home visits.

Direct experience of working within the field of Special Guardianship Orders.


Additional Information

The post holder will be responsible for their own continuous professional development but will be provided with opportunities to grow and develop in the role through local and regional management and leadership initiatives.

The post holder will be required to use his/her initiative in ensuring that the Council’s Equalities Policies are implemented in relation to the work area. This will involve developing a good working knowledge of the policies and applying them personally.

The nature of the post will require some out of office hours work to be undertaken for which time-off-in-lieu may be given.

It is a condition of employment that the post holder will maintain HCPC Registration.

The nature of the duties of this post will require you to travel on Council business on a regular basis, so you must either have a current driving licence and provide a car, or have access to appropriate means of travel.

If you use your vehicle on authorised Council business, you will receive a mileage payment based on the Inland Revenue Authorised Mileage Allowance Payment Scheme (AMAPS). The allowance is provided on the condition that your own insurance covers you for business use and indemnifies the Council against claim (including those concerning passengers) arising out of the use of the vehicle on official business. You will also be eligible for a car loan if you meet the criteria within the Council’s Car Loan Scheme.

We are unable to accept applications from Newly Qualified Social Workers requiring completion of their ASYE for this position.
