Summary of Post

An opportunity has arisen for a part time (18.5 hours) permanent Specialist Recovery Practitioner Social Worker/AMHP to join the South Gloucestershire Recovery Team (North).

As an expert provider of mental health services, we put recovery and re-enablement at the heart of all that we do. We facilitate recovery through the guiding principles of hope, trust, partnership and mutual respect.

The team's focus is on providing effective interventions and treatments to people with severe and enduring mental health needs, and their carers. This involves enabling and assisting service-users to meet daily health, social care and wellbeing needs. Our aim is to empower and enable service-users to maintain or regain their independence in line with their personal recovery goals.

We are open to applications from qualified Social Workers looking to develop their careers in Mental Health. Therefore if you are not an AHMP but are successfully appointed to the job you will commit to carrying out the pre-course requirements for AMHP training and then enrol on the next available AMHP course. Prior to qualification as an AMHP, you will be paid at the Hay 7 grade range. Once you have qualified you will be paid at Hay 6 plus 2 (£36,153) as an AMHP and carry out assessments under the Mental Health Act 1983 as part of a duty rota.

This post is permanent, 18.5 hours per week.

Main Duties

To carry out the duties and responsibilities of the Care Act 2014 and subsequent legislation.

To act as care co-ordinator for service users under the Care Programme Approach and ensure the co-ordination, implementation and review of community care packages which promote independence; to undertake Carers’ Assessments

To prepare social circumstances reports for Mental Health Review Tribunals and to attend hearings

To participate in AWP and the department’s staff development programmes and show that you are committed to continuous learning

To be willing to train as a Practice Assessor and supervise social work students on placement with the team

To be willing to train and practice as an AMHP

To ensure that in all aspects of practice the Council’s Equal Opportunities Policy is followed with particular reference to discriminated groups. The post holder will ensure that practice is conducted following an anti-discriminatory framework.

If you are a qualified AMHP you will be expected to:

Carry out the duties and responsibilities of the Mental Health Act 1983, the Care Act 2014 and subsequent legislation.

Participate in the AMHP rota for the provision of statutory mental health duties. This will require the post holder to conduct assessments regarding the potential compulsory detention and treatment of a person under the Mental Health Act 1983; this entails being personally accountable for decisions whilst acting as an AMHP under the auspices of the Mental Health Act 1983.

Maintain an up-to-date portfolio which records Mental Health Act assessments and other statutory pieces of work.

Be willing to undertake supervision of AMHP trainees.

Evidence 18 hours per year of continuing professional development to retain the AMHP qualification.

Selection Criteria

Essential

Degree in Social Work or equivalent (e.g. DipSW, CQSW, CSS)

To be a qualified AMHP or willing to train and practice as an AMHP

To be a registered social worker with the Health & Care Professionals Council and maintain a continuing professional development portfolio

To be able to travel widely within and outside the Authority on occasions, so you must have either a driving licence and provide a car or have access to appropriate means of travel

If you are an AMPH that you are able to work outside of normal working hours on a unplanned basis and at short notice on occasions

To be able to demonstrate sound IT skills, including Microsoft Word

Able to make decisions in complex situations, sometimes on the basis of uncertain information and must be able to accept that you will be working in situation in which risk taking in relation to decision making is inherent

Exemplify the Council’s values and behaviours

Desirable

To demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of relevant legislation e.g. Mental Health Act 1983, Care Act 2014, Mental Capacity Act 2005 and any subsequent legislation.

With good interpersonal and communication skills you should be able to demonstrate that you are able to work under pressure; that you are self-motivated, able to use your own initiative

Candidates should have experience of acute mental health care and have a passion for developing cutting edge and evidence based practice.

Candidates should be mobile, with the ability to move quickly across a geographically dispersed area with limited access to public transport.

The team operates from 0900-1700 Monday to Friday, with flexibility to offer a service outside these hours, when required.

If you are not an Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP), you should be prepared to undertake the necessary training to achieve this and, upon successful completion, contribute to the AMHP rota as appropriate.

ASYE

Newly Qualified Social Workers (NQSW) joining South Gloucestershire Council will be required to undertake the Assessed and Supported Year in Employment (ASYE) Programme unless they have successfully completed their ASYE and are able to produce certification to confirm this. Completion of the ASYE is required for all NQSW who have qualified since June 2012.

Use of a vehicle

The nature of the duties of this post will require you to travel on Council business on a regular basis, so you must either have a current driving licence and provide a car, or have access to appropriate means of travel.

If you use your vehicle on authorised Council business, you will receive a mileage payment based on the Inland Revenue Authorised Mileage Allowance Payment Scheme (AMAPS). The allowance is provided on the condition that your own insurance covers you for business use and indemnifies the Council against claim (including those concerning passengers) arising out of the use of the vehicle on official business. You will also be eligible for a car loan if you meet the criteria within the Council’s Car Loan Scheme.
