South Gloucestershire Councils StreetCare section has two opportunities available within its highway maintenance teams. We are seeking enthusiastic self-motivated individuals to help in delivering key highway maintenance works across the South Gloucestershire area.

How will you make a difference?
You will based from our operating depot at Yate near Bristol the role of Roadworker is based within the cyclical and reactive teams, these teams predominantly consist of two or more person teams with responsibility for delivering smaller civil engineering, structures and highway maintenance works across our network.
The cyclical and reactive teams provide a one stop shop for managing the many small jobs that need to be completed effectively to meet the needs of our residents and keeping our places safe. While the tasks may be smaller in nature, they are both numerous and varied. You will need to be flexible in your approach to work as the role requires you to react quickly to changing priorities providing support to urgent situations.

What will you be doing:
You will be expected to arrive ready for work on time where you will be assisting in tasks such as:
• Setting out basic traffic management
• Preparing and carrying out pothole and patch repairs on live carriageways
• Laying precast concrete or natural stone kerbs
• Mixing and laying mortar and concrete
• Excavation sometimes by hand to carry out repairs to drainage, ducts or fixing new street furniture
• Operation of small mechanical plant used in the maintenance of highways
• Relaying of flags stones, blocks and cobbles.
• Repairs and replacement of road signs, post and street name signs
• Cutting back of dense vegetation obstructing the highway
• Digging out by hand or machine roadside detritus
• Clearing blocked gullies
• Replacing damaged ironwork in the highway
• To ensure that you and the team works in a safe and effective manner to achieve optimum output and to the required quality.
• Assisting during working hours to urgent situation making the highway safe for users clearing debris from road traffic collisions and using appropriate signing, lighting and guarding to protect the public.
• You may be required to be available to be on-call at evenings and at weekends, on a rota basis, as mutually agreed with the StreetCare Operations Manager.

What we need from you:
To be considered for the roles you will have previous experience in a highway’s maintenance or construction background and a current Streetworks qualification would be advantageous. You will have to demonstrate experience in delivering works to a high standard and have experience in working with bituminous materials including the repair of potholes to conform with current maintenance standards.
Essential
• You will be able to show us that you have the practical skills and knowledge needed to undertake highway or construction maintenance.
• It is essential that you hold a minimum category B licence for manual transmission vehicles with experience in driving vehicles up to 3500kg.
• You will be both reliable and flexible in your approach to work able to respond positively to changes in work priorities
• Able to work well in a team but also be adaptable to changes in team dynamics to accommodate operational needs
• Able to work outdoors in all environments and weather conditions including severe winter weather
