Streetcare Operative – Gardener / Grounds
Salary Band: £18,795 - £19,171pa
Location: Broad Lane, Yate
Working Pattern: Permanent 37 hours a week

How you’ll make a difference as a Grounds Operative:
You will be part of a vital front line team working from one of our operating depots in Yate or Cribb’s Causeway delivering all aspects of grounds maintenance including grass cutting, hedge trimming strimming, leaf bowing, litter picking and weed spraying. Enjoying working outdoors and physical work you will work on all aspects of grounds maintenance within the parks, public spaces, cemeteries, highways, conservation areas and other green environments.
In your role you will assist in the delivery of the council’s social distancing strategies by routinely maintaining the council’s cycle paths and pedestrian network and also the Councils green environmental strategy by the creation and maintenance of wildflower beds, cut and collect grass cutting regimes, conservation areas and other green environments.

What does a typical day look like?
In this varied role, you will undertake maintenance work including grass cutting, hedge cutting, shrub border maintenance, gritting, leaf clearance, litter picking, and dense vegetation cleaning hard surfaces, trimming and reducing hedges, cutting quality and amenity grass, maintaining beds and borders and assisting in the control of weed growth by the application of herbicides throughout the South Gloucestershire Area.
You will carry out routine winter maintenance operations including heavy cut backs in public parks, open spaces, roadside verges and woodland areas using a variety of powered hand tools and mobile plant. This will also include general amenity maintenance duties and horticultural operations, assisting in minor landscaping works such as the planting of bedding, shrubs and trees.
Part of the role will be undertaking routine maintenance of the council’s cycle route network using powered hand tools or mechanical equipment as needed and assisting in the collection fly tips and emptying of bins etc.
On a daily basis you will be using commercial powered hand tools such as brush cutters, powered pruners, long reach pruners, pedestrian mowers etc and ensure that you are able adhere to all safe methods of work and relevant Health and Safety regulations including the wearing of high visibility clothing and PPE.
For this role it is essential that you have a full UK/EU driving licence with experience of driving a long wheel based transit (style) tipper, experience in a similar commercial or public sector gardening landscape maintenance role.

Depending on duties, weekend work may be involved, for which the appropriate enhancement will be paid.

What we need from you:
You will be able to give examples of your previous experience in a gardening / grounds role and demonstrate the confidence and physical abilities to operate commercial professional grounds equipment such as; large petrol Strimmer’s, commercial hedge trimmers, leaf blowers.
In order to be considered you must have a full UK driving licence with experience of driving a long wheel based transit (style) tipper and preferably experience in a similar commercial or public sector.
Your ability to follow works instructions accurately is key to this role with the ability to understand maps and plans and complete records accurately and show a core understanding of health and safety and the risks and hazards associated with the role.
