Technical Support Officer (Trainee)

Summary of Post

This is an exciting opportunity for someone who may be either starting out or looking for a change in their career and wishes to develop their knowledge and skills within a customer focused environment.

The Environment and Community Services Department provides support to a variety of areas including Planning, Street Care, Building Control, Environmental Services, Trading Standards and Licensing.

This role is within the team which specifically supports the function of Building Control, Environmental Services, Trading Standards and Licensing.
We are looking for someone who although may not have office experience is keen to learn and develop their skills whilst working as part of a very busy team supporting the residents and businesses of South Gloucestershire.
The post holder will be expected to work from our Broad Lane and Badminton Road Offices in Yate. This is a permanent contract.

We will be looking to undertake interviews for this position during week commencing 16 December 2019

Main Duties

The Technical Support Trainee will report to a Technical Support Team Leader.

Please note despite the title this is not an IT support role. Under the day to day supervision of the Technical Support Team Leader the post holder will be responsible for assisting in the delivery of high quality professional administration support to the Building Control, Environmental Services, Trading Standards and Licensing Teams.

A typical day may include some of the following:

Working with a friendly team in a busy office environment this role is interesting and varied, a typical day may include : Preparing files for Building Control Inspections, answering general enquiries, Inputting Data for Building Control or Licensing Applications, allocating requests for service to Environmental Services Officers, Making appointments for customers to attend Licensing Office to submit Taxi License applications, using established systems and procedures to collate, record and update information ensuring information is accurately captured, advising customers where their information is incomplete, following legislation and protocols to enable the issuing of Decisions &/or Licenses and other permissions, attending Taxi Knowledge Test and other external training sessions to assist with the administration of the Licensing function.

Indexing and filing of documents manually and electronically and assisting other members of staff with any duties relevant to the service.

Full on the job training will be given. The post holder will operate a variety of manual and IT systems including; Microsoft Office, databases and document management system.

Physical Effort and Working Environment (other than in a normal office environment)

The post will be primarily office-based although there may be some occasions where the post holder is expected to work outside the office, for example meeting members of the public at roadshows or events.

Selection Criteria

1. Five GCSEs above C grade including Maths and English, NVQ2
2. Good verbal and written communications skills
3. A polite and efficient manner, with the ability to deal with customers courteously
4. A good knowledge of IT with experience of various different Office packages
5. Numeric and demonstrate a technical aptitude
6. Demonstrate a willingness to learn new tasks

7. Experience of working in a customer focussed role or environment

Salary: £18,426
